Kidney stones

Kidney stones, also called Nephrolithiasis occur due to formation of solid hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys and the urinary tract. Kidney stones have many causes and can affect any part of your urinary tract from your kidneys to your bladder. Stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together.

Small stones pass out in the urine, but larger stones can cause blockage in the ureter causing severe pain in the lower back or abdomen. Other symptoms include fever, blood in urine, persistent need to urinate, painful urination and nausea and vomiting.

Kidney stones often have no definite, single cause, although several factors may increase your risk. Combination of many factors like genetics, environmental, dehydration, certain medications, eating a diet that's high in protein, sodium (salt) and sugar may increase your risk of some types of kidney stones.

Drinking enough water can prevent the formation of stones to a large extent. In severe cases, large kidney stones if left untreated, can lead to kidney damage
